We have two - one was on our wooden deck for 12 years until we customized it. The new one we are using in camp area in the lawn. We LOVE our first one so much that when we customized it into a faux wishing well design we knew we had to have the same for our camp area in our backyard. We could only find it at True Value. The old one we just customized into a water fountain by day and a fire pit by night by just making a 30" brick wall that looks like an old fashion well and we are using the fire dish and lid when we want to go from daytime fountain to to camp fire. We remove the decorative fountian bucket and set the fire dish/lid into the faux well opening... the insulating sand bottom you build your fire on protects the fountain pump/water reservior which sits under/inside the faux well from the heat of the fire above - awesome & easy. The old one still looks new but because we leave it out all year the wooden handles needed to be replaced after 3 years. We made replacement handles out of pressure treated wood and they have lasted nine years now. We have the new unit being used with the full set up as it come "right out of the box" like we did with the old one for the past 12 years - you will need about a two full shovels of sand inside the firedish before to use it. The sand bottom also allows you to use it on a wooden deck/patio without fear of damage or fire under the unit during use. The unit used "as it is sold" stands at the perfect hight for viewing while sitting in lawn chairs and perfect for tending the fire and for all ages to gather around to cook marshmellows or hot dogs... when you tired of the fire; close the lid and go to bed. For peace of mind we always watered down the grass/deck around the unit for extra safety against the sparkes that pop out of the unit during use Worth the price for sure and light enough to travel anywhere or be built into your own custom designs.
Pros: can go anywhere where you want to have a fire, lid allows you to just safely cover and leave!, our 12yr old one still looks new, sand bottom allows unside heat safetly, we even bbq on it if you have a round bbq grate
Cons: wooden handles need to be replaced after few years, a screen to prevent spark pop out might be helpful, tell people they need to get sand before using it, a log grate would be nice but not nessesary
I would recommend this to a friend!
